The Causeway, Sunday Evening

Sparkle bounced on his toes as he waited to meet Hernando on the Causeway for their date. He'd... kind of panicked. Being given a couple of days to come up with something good given the date that Hernando had arranged had left him flailing, and now he was second-guessing basically everything, ever. But it was too late to back out now, even if his choice for the evening was less about art and more about ambiance.

He desperately hoped that the place wouldn't be swamped with kids.

He also hadn't even gotten as far as making dinner reservations.

Tonight was going to be interesting, okay?

Well since his throat was exposed anyway..

Hernando leaned in to brush a slow but brief kiss up the side of his neck. Murmuring, "Enjoying that picture?"

And that earned a low chuckle from Sparkle, eyes still closed, slow smile creeping over his lips.

"Oh yes," he agreed. "I very much am."

Hernando sighed theatrically. "And no dark corners for me to drag you into here."

Then he purred much more quietly into Sparkle's ear, "I'm glad."

"No dark corners," Sparkle laughed, leaning up against him. "But the trade-off is dragons and happy little wormy fish buddies."

Eels. Eels, Sparkle.

"Which were only in this one small part of the building," Hernando smiled at him, "There is still so much more to see."

They weren't going to make it through the whole thing if they kept on like this. Hernando didn't mind in the least. They could always come back.

So far they'd made it through the front door and had their picture taken by a random teenage kid.

They weren't going to get out of this one small part of the building, at this rate.

"There is," Sparkle agreed, taking Hernando's hand again. "Should we pick a direction and go? Maybe make it a challenge to see if there are any dark corners here?"

There wouldn't be. But what if there were?

Hernando wound his fingers with Sparkle's. "Mmhm. You lead. I dragged you to the sea dragons. The next part should be your choice."

There was always after. They could find dark corners somewhere if they put their minds to it.

"Hell yeah," Sparkle laughed. "There's an exhibit about the North Atlantic and I hear it's got puffins. Puffins! They're like sea toucans!"

And who didn't like a good sea toucan?

"I have only ever seen them on a stamp," Hernando confessed, "Let us go see the sea toucans!"

Sparkle was going to be so sad when he learned that the happy sea toucans almost exclusively ate the happy wormy fishy friends.

"Yessss!"

Sparkle wasn't quite dragging Hernando in that direction, nah. But it was a near thing.

It probably made them happy to have wormy fishy friends in their fat little toucan tummies though.

Hernando laughed and strode quickly along with him. "Do they do a program with them?"

"I don't think so," Sparkle said, and now he was pouting for all of three seconds. "But still! Puffins!"

What wasn't to like, right?

"Perhaps they have a suggestion box on the way out," Hernando consoled him.

The smell, Sparkle. The smell of puffins was not to like. The birds themselves hell yes. The stench, no.

Well... seabirds.

"Oh, hey! I bet they do," Sparkle said, grinning and just barely refraining from falling into an outright skip. "I mean, even if they just, like, do a 'feeding time' thing or something for them? That would be pretty cool, right?"

Sparkle wanted to feed the stinky birds.

Seabirds indeed.

"Sometimes zoos do things like this," Hernando agreed, "There is no reason an aquarium could not feed birds and turtles for people to see."

They were probably not going to let Sparkle feed the stinky birds. But who knew, zoos sometimes did that too for sea lions or other animals.

"They probably do with the dolphins," Sparkle mused. "And watching the sharks eat would be pretty kickass, too..."

Not that the island hadn't given him more than his fair share of shark encounters already.

"We should look and see if they do those," Hernando nodded. He had seen sharks swimming while snorkeling but he did not wish to be around wild sharks when they were eating.

Or even hungry.

"Next time we see someone who works here, we can corner them and ask," Sparkle decided. "Even if we missed feeding time today, we can know for next time!"

"I like those words," Hernando said warmly, "'Next time'."

"Next time," Sparkle said back, grinning shamelessly. "Next time, next time..."

He liked those words, too.

Hernando leaned in to brush a kiss across his temple. "I am so glad you are happy."

Sparkle needed it. He'd been too stressed lately and Hernando hadn't quite been secret about his opinion of that.

"I needed this," Sparkle admitted, smiling and nuzzling in for a moment more. Another moment later and he perked up. "So, maybe next time we can crash the onsen or something? I've still never actually been to the onsen..."

"Please, by all means call me when you need to be abducted and distracted and made happy," Hernando teased.

Not so much with the kidding.

"Did you want to go to the onsen instead of a spa in the city?" he asked, "Or both on different trips?"

"Different trips," Sparkle announced. "Definitely different trips. Maybe we do the mainland first. Getting distance from that place is great, you know? Kind of important to hammer in that we can."

"I am in favor of this," Hernando admitted, "Not the least because the onsen is open to the public and is rarely empty. A spa may have a couples package."
