The Causeway, Sunday Evening

Sparkle bounced on his toes as he waited to meet Hernando on the Causeway for their date. He'd... kind of panicked. Being given a couple of days to come up with something good given the date that Hernando had arranged had left him flailing, and now he was second-guessing basically everything, ever. But it was too late to back out now, even if his choice for the evening was less about art and more about ambiance.

He desperately hoped that the place wouldn't be swamped with kids.

He also hadn't even gotten as far as making dinner reservations.

Tonight was going to be interesting, okay?

"Good," Sparkle decided, stepping up close and smiling down at their hands. "And anybody who expects you to probably isn't worth it anyway."

Hernando smiled and leaned in for a kiss. "Not to me, no."

Sparkle, in turn, nipped at Hernando's lip playfully before kissing him, and then leaned back to smile at him.

"You be you," he said, poking him lightly in the chest with his free hand. "Because you're pretty damn great, dammit."

"I could say the same of you," Hernando mused, "though I think perhaps you need the advice less?"

He smiled, "Come. There are more fishes to be seen."

"Heh." Sparkle huffed out a soft laugh. "Yeah."

No. No, he could stand to hear that at every possible opportunity. It would do him some good, maybe.

He leaned up and bumped his nose lightly against Hernando's, and then nodded again.

"Lead on."

Hernando nuzzled his nose against Sparkle's. With a last lingering look at the sea dragons, he moved past them to the smaller tanks of sea horses. They were no sea dragons but still very neat.

The tanks also had some tiny sand eels who occasionally peeked up from the substrate and looked around for food.

Hernando took one look at them and promptly said, "Let's have those."

"They... they're playing peek-a-boo and I want ten."

This was possibly even an adequate number of tiny peek-a-boo eel friends.

"I think you would have to have ten," Hernando said when he read the small sign, "They are colony creatures."

"Oh no," Sparkle wispered, leaning in to peer at them in awe. "Friendfish."

This was basically going to be the way he was at every tank along the way, yes.

Hernando hoped that would be the case. Sparkle was an unfettered delight.

The sand eels popped back down their holes when he leaned in. Slowly resurfacing one by one.

And it took all of Sparkle's willpower to not cackle and lean in again. All the better for watching them, after all.

"I love them. I don't know if I love them as much as sea dragons, but if these are a pet thing I want them."

"I love them a little less than sea dragons but we know sea dragons are not pets," Hernando said, "Though I am not sure these would be either. You shall have to look it up and see whether they can go in the tank or no."

"Yeah," Sparkle laughed. "If these guys aren't, I'm sure there's some kind of eel that people keep as pets. Maybe. I hope."

Hernando did not take the cheap shot. He simply smiled and nodded and then tugged Sparkle over to the next tank of sea horses. These all looked pregnant but the sign said they weren't.

"I guess it is difficult to have the seahorses," he said when he read the sign, "They are slow eaters. These do not look like they eat so slowly."

Podgy. Podgy seahorses.

"Well, then I guess we'll take seahorses off the list too," Sparkle sighed, though he didn't actually sound that put-out by that fact. All the more reason for another date here, after all. "There's got to be something that people keep as pets that aren't wild-caught and won't, like, die if you look at them funny."

"People keep sea water tanks," Hernando assured him, "They have them in pet stores. There must be some fish that are bred in captivity and easy to keep."

Not so much, with salt water.

Yeah, Sparkle had heard stories about the wild blue tang and clownfish populations in the wake of those two Pixar films.

... And the demand for dalmatians after that movie with dozens of dogs in it.

People were trash in the pursuit of trendy pets.

"I guess we'll find out," Sparkle decreed. "I mean, Milady was."

Because betta.

People were trash in general.

"If no, then there shall be some pretty fresh water fish," Hernando assured him.

Too bad you could only really have one betta.

T'was a shame. But they did house okay with some bottom-feeder species.

Not that a loach was half as pretty, exactly.

"I might need to start a second tank," Sparkle mused. "Maybe cichlids or something."

"Are they not aggressive?" Hernando inquired as they walked along. "I have seen some pretty guppies but, well, guppies."

Guppies died in the blink of an eye. They shouldn't even count as fish.

"Cichlids? Yeah, they're nippy. I wouldn't put them in the same tank as milady or anything. But apparently they're okay with, like, more cichlids."

Sparkle shrugged. He'd been googling. He was kind of serious about wanting more fish, since they were the one pet he could have that Atton wouldn't get weird about.

"That would be interesting," Hernando said with a smile, "A whole family of fishes for generations."

He was tempted to get an aquarium for the apartment purely for Sparkle's enjoyment.

You would never get him to leave, Hernando.

"We'd have to, like, start tracing fishy family trees or something," Sparkle mused. "Because that sort of thing is super important to fish, probably."

The fish did not care.

Sparkle did not care that the fish did not care.

That was a bonus that more than made up for having to clean a fish tank twice a month.

"Mm," Hernando agreed, "You would want to trace their lineage. Like horses for pedigree."

Hernando had little idea what he was talking about but it seemed a thing to say.

This was basically the correct way to carry on a conversation with Sparkle about nothing in particular, yup.

"Ooo, we could do little, like, fish dressage demonstrations..."

How would that even work, Sparkle?
